Diezani loses $40m jewelries permanently
A former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison Madueke has permanently lost her 2,149 pieces of jewellery and a customised gold iPhone, all valued at about $40 million, to the Nigerian government.
This came as a Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Nicholas Oweibo, on Tuesday ordered the permanent forfeiture of the items to the government.
Justice Oweibo, while ordering for the final forfeiture said that Diezani, through her lawyer, Awa Kalu (SAN), was unable to show cause why the items should not be permanently forfeited.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had prayed the court to order for the forfeiture of the property.
The anti-graft agency had said that it reasonably suspected that the jewellery and gold iPhone were acquired with fraud proceeds.
