Nigeria's former chief of general staff's wife dies of coronavirus

Chief (Mrs) Rebecca Folashade Diya, the younger wife of Nigeria's former chief of general staff and de-factor military vice president, Lt. Gen. Oladipo Diya, has died.

A report by The Guardian claimed she died of coronavirus late Monday night. May 18, at the age of 66. Her death was announced in a statement released by Olawale Adekoya, the special adviser media and strategy to Diya.

“With grief in our hearts but gratitude to Almighty God, we announce the transition onto eternal glory of Chief Mrs Deborah Folashade Diya (JP), wife of His Excellency, Lt. Gen. Oladipo Diya (Rtd); whose death occurred on Monday, May 18, 2020. She was aged 66.

“Madam Deborah Folashade Diya was preparing and looking forward to her 66th birthday celebration on May 23, 2020 (this week). But as man proposes, God disposes. Six days ago, she took ill and was taken to the hospital, where she took her last breath on Monday, May 18,” the statement read in parts.

Members of Diya's household including the former chief of general staff are now under isolation.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, tested negative for COVID-19.

His wife, Senator Remi Tinubu, also tested negative to the infectious disease, according to a statement released by the media office of the former Lagos state governor.

The two decided to take the COVID-19 test after it was discovered his late chief security officer (CSO), Lateef Raheem, had COVID-19, a statement released on Monday, April 27, by Tunde Rahman, Tinubu's spokesman, disclosed.

Similarly, the chairman of the defunct Sosoliso Airlines, Victor Ikwuemesi, died of coronavirus in London, a close friend of the family disclosed on Tuesday, April 14.

Ikwuemesi was admitted in a London hospital for an undisclosed illness and later tested positive for coronavirus in the hospital. A close friend of the deceased's son identified as Ikechi Uko confirmed the death of the businessman.

He described the death of the airline chief as very sad. A family source said Ikwuemesi was in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on oxygen since he arrived in a hospital in London.
