Pogba and Bruno Fernandes can't start together

'Pogba and Fernandes can't start

together'

Former Liverpool man Danny Murphy is of the

opinion that Manchester United cannot afford to

play both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in the

same side.

He believes Donny van de Beek will soon come

into the regular starting line up at Old Trafford,

perhaps instead of Pogba.

This is what he said in his Mail Sport column:

Rashford urges United

improvement

Marcus Rashford has urged Manchester United to

start games better and improve their overall

performance level in the Premier League.

United have fallen behind in both their league

games so far, going on to lose 3-1 at home to

Crystal Palace and then rescuing a 3-2 win at

Brighton.

Yet their performances have left plenty to be

desired, with United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

admitting his side did not merit all three points at

the Amex Stadium. They salvaged the win through

a Bruno Fernandes penalty with the final kick of

the game, after Rashford had put them 2-1 up

earlier on in the second half.

This is what Rashford told MUTV after the win:

Irwin: United behind the curve

Denis Irwin believes Manchester United are miles

off the required fitness and performance level in

the Premier League right now, after two games.

This is what Irwin said on MUTV :

United fans agree with Ferdinand

about Upamecano and centre-back

transfer

Manchester United fans have been responding to

Rio Ferdinand’s transfer plea.

Speaking on BT Sport, the former United defender

outlined how he thinks the current centre-back

pairing of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire are

not up to scratch.

Instead, he urged United to target a new defender

in the final week of the transfer window.

Posting a video of his analysis on Twitter, he

asked United fans their thoughts on whether a

centre-back was needed - here are some of the

responses. (Many United fans agree with his

assessment.)

Ferdinand later named RB Leipzig’s Dayot

Upamecano as an ideal target.

Roma 'plan one last bid' for Chris

Smalling

Roma will make one final attempt to sign Chris

Smalling, according to Tuttosport.

Inter Milan are also believed to be interested in

the United loanee which will lead Roma to make

one final bid this coming week.

OPINION: United could change

Jadon Sancho stance to fire up

three players

All summer long, the record has barely changed;

Manchester United are interested in a transfer for

Jadon Sancho.

It’s a line fans have heard a thousand times, to

the point of boredom, though it did not feel

especially relevant during a frenetic 3-2 victory

over Brighton on Saturday lunchtime.

The adopted mantra from United and many of

their followers is that the right-wing drastically

needs attention, that a marquee addition is the

only thing that will solve Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s

problems. Solskjaer, to be fair, has never directly

said it but the fact he left out Daniel James — the

man who filled the right-wing position for most of

last season — from his entire matchday squad at

Brighton perhaps reflected the Norwegian’s

feelings on the situation.

Yet Mason Greenwood , the man who started on

the right flank and has done so well since James’

collapse in form, was one of the few United

players who shone at the Amex Stadium. His

ability to run at pace, yet with composure on the

ball, is astonishing for an 18-year-old and on

another day he would have notched a goal and an

assist, both his and Marcus Rashford’s efforts

either side of half-time chalked off for offside.

Put simply, the right-wing position did not appear

United’s biggest problem on a day when they

were outplayed by Brighton. So with only around a

week remaining in the summer window, what

next?

Why United are set to make

another Bruno Fernandes transfer

payment

United are set to pay Sporting Lisbon another

€5million for Bruno Fernandes, according to

Portuguese outlet Record.

Fernandes made his 25th appearances for United

since joining in January over the weekend, which

will reportedly trigger a clause in his deal and see

the deal reach a total of €63m.

James Garner is giving United

what they wanted

United’s late win over Brighton this weekend again

raised the issue of transfer recruitment with just

over a week left in the summer window.

Sole summer signing Donny van de Beek was

used as a second-half substitute at the Amex

Stadium, while returning loan goalkeeper Dean

Henderson dropped down to the bench after his

fine debut in midweek.

United’s side were only good enough for third-

place in the Premier League last season and with

minimal investment this summer it is already hard

to see how they will improve with only one new

arrival.

The late win helped to ease growing pressure on

United in the transfer market, but later in the day

James Garner helped to show just why Ole

Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are getting it right in one

area off the pitch this summer.

Alex Telles 'liked' United win vs

Brighton

In the modern world of football, this probably

counts as a transfer hint.

Solskjaer praised two players after

win at Brighton

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out Bruno Fernandes’

strong mentality and a fine Marcus Rashford goal

as two of the few positives Manchester United

could take from their win at Brighton.

Solskjaer told MUTV that United were still way off

the pace in terms of fitness, but clung onto

Fernandes and Rashford — and the fact United

salvaged a win late on — as bright spots from the

game.

Manchester United win at Brighton

poses more questions than it

answers

Manchester United got what they deserved. They

invited pressure onto themselves, Brighton levelled

in added time and everyone heard the full-time

shrill. Fatboy Slim’s ‘Praise You’ played, staff

exchanged fist bumps and some were already

down the tunnel. Brighton merited praise.

But the game had not finished. Harry Maguire was

adamant his header had been handled on the line

by Neal Maupay and a game that had finished had

to restart. Maupay had handled the ball.

With one kick between a draw and a victory for

United, Bruno Fernandes approached the ball in

the 100th minute and caressed it into the top

corner. The whistle blew - this time for the final

time.

Fernandes has appeared fatigued in recent months

and cannot get much respite at home with a

newborn son to care for. The Portuguese has been

a ‘moments’ player since United’s last truly

emphatic victory at Aston Villa on July 9 and that

continued at the Amex Stadium, where he atoned

for gifting Brighton a penalty to create two of

United’s goals and claim the decider. Fernandes

is usually the difference.

Manchester United 'convinced they

fan find agreement' over Alex

Telles transfer and more rumours

Manchester United are ‘convinced’ that they will be

able to reach an agreement with Porto over the

transfer of Alex Telles, according to reports.

With just over a week of the transfer window to

go, United are still trying to add to their single

signing of Donny van de Beek before the October

5 deadline.

While Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho

remains the top target, M.E.N. Sport understands

that United stepped up plans to strengthen their

defence following the opening day loss to Crystal

Palace, a view that would have likely not been

changed after their extremely fortunate win over

Brighton on Saturday.

The club had been monitoring a number of left-

backs due to uncertainty in the position and it’s

understood that signing one has become a more

pressing concern.

United 'hold informal talks' over

Arkadiusz Milik transfer

OPINION: United could change

12:49

KEY EVENT

“As for Milik, the

intermediary told me that

there’s informal talks with

Leipzig, Manchester City,

Manchester United,

Fulham and Tottenham.,”

he told MundoNapoli.

“The latter are the most

reliable track, but the

formula requested by

Napoli does not convince

Mourinho.”

‘‘

Arkadiusz Milik of Poland

“On the plus side, they’ve

still got this wonderful

combination of hitting

teams on the break. A

magnificent pass from

Bruno Fernandes, the

weight of the pass and

the run from Rashford, but

there is so much more to

do. He sits Ben White

down twice. That is a

magnificent goal.

“For all that we saw about

them being poor

defensively, they’ve still

got that magic moving

forward and can offer

things like that.”

‘‘

Alan Shearer (Image: BBC)

14:40

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has

a big decision to make

because Manchester

United will continue to

ship goals if he keeps on

naming Paul Pogba and

Bruno Fernandes in the

same line-up.

“Excellent creative players

as they are, neither is

good enough defensively

to play together in a

three-man midfield.

“That is certainly the case

against any of the Big Six

and on Saturday they were

repeatedly caught out

against Brighton.

“It is not laziness on

Bruno or Pogba’s part. It

is just an aspect of their

game that defensively they

are reactive rather than

proactive. They just do

not spot or sense danger

quickly enough. By the

time they realise they need

to get back, it is too late.

“I think it is significant

that United have signed

Donny van de Beek from

Ajax. He has got more

energy and is more of a

genuine box-to-box player

than Pogba or Bruno.

“I think once he is fully

integrated into the United

set-up, he starts with a

more orthodox holding

midfield player and that

leaves one spot left for

the two glamour players,

unless you are up against

a weaker team at Old

Trafford without much

attacking threat.

“Over the past few

months, I have to say

Bruno has been more

influential in an attacking

sense than Pogba, so I

do not know where that

leaves the Frenchman,

who has been substituted

just over an hour into

both United’s Premier

League games
